Lugar Boswell Thistle 3 Kirkintilloch Rob Roy 0

Lugar Boswell Thistle 3 Kirkintilloch Rob Roy 0

Lugar got back to league business following the Xmas and Ne’erday break but this has no holiday despite what the scoreline may suggest. Rob Roy unveiled their new signing, the former Dunipace captain Ian Davis, who took his place in the centre of the defence. Lugar were without the injured Ricky Hanvey and Craig Muir was only just fit enough to take a place on the bench, Stuart McPherson and Campbell McCluskie were their replacements.

Thistle got off to a flyer and a clever ball over the top of the Rab’s defence in the third minute found Patrick Walker who had cleverly beat the offside trap, he spotted Scott McNab off his goal line and a perfectly flighted lob caught him out for the opening goal. Rob Roy hit back right away and Paul Bonar came close but his effort was wide of target. McCluskie then had a chance from a Lugar corner but McNab did well to turn it round the post.

McCluskie gets a little help from Walker.

McNab makes the save.

With seventeen minutes on the watch, Walker again found himself in space as he ran onto another clever through ball from Andy Boyle and he gave McNab no chance as he slotted the ball into the net to give Lugar a two goal advantage.

Kirkintilloch were not giving up however and, one time Lugar trialist, Stuart Gauley headed a Bonar cross just wide. The twenty fourth minute saw Walker complete his hat-trick and wrap up the scoring for Lugar. McNab failed to hang on to an Alex Duffy shot and dropped it at Walker’s feet. Walker calmly slotted it past the grounded keeper.

And slams it beyond the stricken McNab.

One minute later and it looked as if Walker had made it four but somehow the assistant referee deemed that he had been offside.

Rob Roy continued to look for a breakthrough but they were finding it hard as they were up against a resolute defence and Stuart Leavy was in outstanding form as he denied the Rab’s time after time. Shots from Tony Chalmers, Ritchie Chang and Ian Davis all missed out but the biggest miss of the game came with seven minutes left in the half. Leavy made another good save, this time from Bonar, but he spilled the ball and it fell kindly for Andy Dearie, with the goal at his mercy he blasted over from only 3 yards out. Leavy then saved Lugar again when he held a Davis header from a Bonar free-kick. McPherson then had a chance at the other end when he got onto the end of a Walker flick-on from a Paul Cameron corner but he put it into the wrong side of the side netting.

McPherson just fails to add to the scoreline.

Half-time score Lugar 3 Rob Roy 0

Lugar started the second half well with Duffy forcing a save from McNab early on, but it was Kirkintilloch who were more in command and they forced the Boswell back for long periods. But as Lugar’s defence held firm and frustrated the visitors the game became a little bit more physical. Stuart Morrison’s reckless challenge on Leavy, saw the Lugar keeper needing extensive treatment and it looked at one stage as if he would be unable to continue, Lugar had no replacement and fortunately referee Madden allowed fully five minutes for Harry McMorland, the Lugar physio, to work his magic and get him back into the game. Thankfully he was able to continue and it was just as well for Lugar that he was. With fifteen minutes of normal time left Kirkintilloch were awarded a penalty, which baffled most of the fans around Rosebank. As Leavy came out to punch clear a corner, the referee apparently felt that he had pushed Morrison and he pointed to the spot. Gauley took the kick well but Leavy pulled off a fabulous save to keep a well deserved clean sheet and justice was seen to be done.

Shortly after his penalty miss Gauley allowed his frustrations to get the better of him and he was dismissed for something he said to the assistant referee. The away dressing room door was next to feel his fury and unfortunately this time he didn’t miss. With the visitors now down to ten men Lugar were content to sit back and allow Rob Roy to have possession with an occasional break upfield from Cameron and Boyle. Lugar comfortably soaked up the pressure and ran the clock down to claim the three points.
