Lugar’s master of tactics, Jimsie Kirkland, changed his team selection from last week and it proved to be the right choice on the day.

Craig Pettigrew and Patrick Walker were both re-introduced to the starting line-up with Campbell McCluskie and Jonny Scott making way for them. There were also a number of positional changes and they seemed to catch Kilwinning out.

Lugar started strongly but it was the Buffs who had the first chance from a corner, Stuart Leavy punching clear whilst under pressure. Lugar then showed that their pace upfront was going to cause problems for the home defence. Alex Duffy raced through and despite the close attentions of his marker he managed to stay on his feet but he was off balance when he got his shot in and it was easily saved by Andy McCondichie. Patrick Walker then came close with a header from a Paul Cameron cross but with the keeper caught flatfooted the ball went inches wide.

With 17 minutes on the clock Lugar finally made the breakthrough that their play deserved. Ricky Hanvey picked up a clearance from the Kilwinning defence and from some 30 yards he sent in a shot that screamed past McCondichie, in fact he was still on the way down when the ball came back out from the back of the net.

Cameron then had a chance to put the Thistle further ahead when he burst unchallenged into the box but McCondichie did enough to put him off and he lost control of the ball and it went harmlessly behind for a goal kick.

Lugar’s pace upfront was causing all sorts of problems for Kilwinning’s defence, Andy Boyle’s clever through ball found Duffy and as the striker outsprinted Roland Fabiani into the box, the defender’s mis-timed tackle resulted in referee Richard Gough, pointing to the penalty spot. Cameron made amends for his earlier miss by converting the kick.

Half time score- Kilwinning Rangers 0 Lugar Boswell Thistle 2

Lugar started the second half in the same fashion and could have inflicted a heavier defeat on the league’s joint leaders but the brown stuff hit the air movement device after only five minutes. Cameron fired over a cross from the right wing that found Duffy once more in the clear, unfortunately for the Boswell the assistant referee, whose position was questionable, ( Lugar’s speed even caught him out!), called it as offside. Cameron then went from hero to zero when he gave the assistant his view on the matter. The flag went up again and Cameron then saw Mr Gough reach for the dreaded red card and it was shower time for the Lugar player.

From here on in it was to be total backs to the wall stuff for Lugar and they fought valiantly to keep the Buffs at bay. Kilwinning threw everything at Lugar and forced Lugar to defend in number with only a few forays upfield to try and relieve the pressure. Leavy was outstanding in goal and saved Lugar time and again with some inspired goalkeeping. With time slowly dragging for Lugar, Gareth Armstrong fired in a shot that Leavy parried but it came straight back to the Buffs’ striker who this time placed it past the Boswell keeper to give his side a lifeline. Lugar however hung on for dear life and even had to suffer 5 minutes of stoppage time during which a Jim Donnelly shot hit the upright and was cleared. But the final whistle eventually came and Lugar were applauded of the park by both sets of supporters whilst a few jeers were directed Kilwinning’s way.
